It is quite natural for anyone to feel a bit uncomfortable when you are visiting any country as a group or as a backpacker. All countries are reasonable safe and you have to be on alert or be prepared to adjust yourself to the new situation. I prefer to follow the following.
- If going alone, book a hotel closer to any train or metro station, if they are available or choose a hotel situated in a popular area.
- Keep your passport and 50% of your cash in the safe box in your room or at the reception.
- If paper visa has been given, take a photo of it in your mobile which will be of use in case you lose your original paper. Also of your room key or the cover in which it was given since some of us tend to forget or get confused with the room number in large hotel.
- Better to carry credit card or multicurrency debit cards apart from hard currency.
- Always take one or two hotel cards with you when you go out since it will be easy for a taxi to trace your hotel even if you cannot locate it yourself, while coming back. In most countries the hotel address is given at the back side in local language with a map.
- Do not flaunt yourself to attract others with very aristocratic stylish dress or costly cameras or by opening your wallet in public with packs of currency notes. This will attract thieves too. Keep only the needed money with you and that too in different places on you.
- Always your shoulder bags with valuables must be held in front of your chest or it in your arm pit, if small.
- Better to avoid gold or diamond jewelries to the maximum.
- If alone, do not stay out very late at night and visit dungeon places. Those went with large group , it is better to stay in small small groups.
- Have a copy of your passport & travel insurance on you always.
- Strictly follow the traffic rules of the visiting country.
- Never engage yourself in any heated exchange of words with locals.
